Babies and young children rely on pictures and photos to help makes sense of the content of the book. You don't have to follow the story text to the word, but highlight the key words and focus vocabulary. Also, repetition! Question formation such as can you see the...? Where is the...? What colour is the...? What sound does this/that make...? etc

When developing reading skills, make sure the book you are offering are reading level appropriate. This sounds so logical but many parents or schools may have limited resources and present reading material to advanced or in some cases, not decodable.
