Understanding synthetic phonics

Learn six words and you can only read six words. learn six letter sounds and you can read a hundred words!

Synthetic phonics method presents the letter shapes and sounds in groups. This is not in alphabetic order, but groups of letter sounds that allow children to read, blend (sound out the letter sounds) and segment (chunk letter sounds together).
Synthetic phonics help children to read and attempt to sound out and write words.
There are some words that cannot be easily decoded and these are 'tricky words' and also children need to know the 'high frequency words' which are always used.
Providing children with progressive reading materials will develop confidence and strategies for continued reading.
